History

Ocean Road Community Association began in the 1970‘s it started out as the Casanova Club, which was based on the site of Ocean Road School. The closure of the school saw the club relocate to the now Brigham’s Social Club. In 1987 the supermarket chain Asda approached the Council with a proposal to build a car park on the land, which saw the Community Association based in its current location.

The present site is centrally located in the Beacon and Bents ward of South Shields. Its central position gives good access to public transport and other local services. In 1997 a feasibility study commissioned by South Tyneside Education Service took place to assertion the need for an extension. Centre members and local residents were consulted to find out what facilities were needed to increase provision and to enhance the opportunities available for adult and community learning. An area that was highlighted was the physical constraints of the building, which restricted the range of activities that could be offered.

An S.R.B and ERDF bid was secured to utilise land adjacent to Ocean Road Community Association to build an extension.

The extension opened in 2001 with new facilities and rooms for activities and groups to hire for sports & fitness, youth activities, arts and crafts leisure.

The centre currently is open from 9am – 9pm Monday – Friday and 9.30 – 3.30pm on Saturdays.

In 2012 Ocean Road CA celebrated is 25 years with a number of events and free activities.
